A hymn we often sing during Church Sunday service, written by Samuel J Stone in 1866 goes like this:
“The Church’s one foundation Is Jesus Christ her Lord,
She is His new creation By water and the Word.
From heaven He came and sought her To be His holy bride;
With His own blood He bought her And for her life He died.”
This short verse carries some very important reminders. It reminds us that we, and by extension the Church, are His creation. More importantly, it also reminds us of how the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ has come and sought us, bought us, and died for us. How thankful are we to have such a foundation!
One of the hallmarks of the Christian faith is our relationship with God. Without a good relationship with Him, our lives will be unbalanced and unstable. Nothing will be able to help keep us firm and on the right path without being anchored to the Rock of Ages, Jesus Christ.
A recent popular worship song written in 2012 by Cornerstone, Hillsong United, is a remake of an old favourite hymn written in 1834 by Edward Mote:
“My hope is built on nothing less Than Jesus blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame But wholly trust in Jesus name.”
These two songs are years apart, the first one written in 1866, the second in 2012. However, the similar message they carry show that the need for God as our foundation never changes. Living our lives as Christians, we have to build on nothing less than Jesus and what He has done for us. No foundation can be stronger or sturdier than our God!
Cornerstone, Hillsong United re-uses the verse from The Solid Rock, in which the important message by Edward Mote is repeated:
“On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.”
