Did you know that multi-tasking is never a real phenomenon but something that is scientifically impossible? Research done shows that our minds are unable to process 2 tasks simultaneously. We focus on one task and then quickly refocus on a second task but never successfully perform both at the same time. In a similar vein, our hearts cannot focus on 2 Gods or be filled with 2 spirits. We are filled with and led by the Spirit of God or we allow the spirit of the world fill and lead us. The 2 spirits cannot co-exist in us because they have radically opposing agendas.
The Apostle Paul expounds in 1 Cor 2:11-16 on a test that the Corinthian Church can use for a spiritual health check. The Jews were bent on miraculous signs while the Greeks looked for wisdom but Paul wanted to remind them that the Holy Spirit of God would reveal the mysteries if they were genuinely seeking. So how do we know if we have the Holy Spirit of God living within us and leading us?
1. With the Holy Spirit, we “may understand what God has freely given us” (v12). Can we say that we truly understand the significance of what God has done, sending his Son down to take our place at the cross of Calvary? Do we realise the extent of grace and love that the Holy and Perfect God has poured out on filthy and unworthy sinners like us?
2. With the Holy Spirit, we speak with words taught by the Spirit, “explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words” (v13). Does the Bible (Word of God) come alive and be the guiding principle for our daily lives? Do we preach Biblical truths in words that glorify God or do we pay more attention and energy to making things sound and look ‘beautiful’ and ‘relevant’?
3. We accept things from God, who gives us wisdom to discern spiritual things (v14). Do we see God’s hand in the things that happen to us? Do we discern if the beliefs and values we are exposed to are from God? And if they are, do we have the wisdom to obey?
4. We examine and evaluate all things, as led by wisdom from the Holy Spirit. Do we put on the eyes and heart of Jesus that we may see things from God’s perspective instead of ours?
Paul reminds us that we who are Jesus’ followers, have the mind of Christ. Have we reflected on the authenticity of our Christian faith and living it led by the Holy Spirit?
