The Apostle Paul’s concluding remarks and greetings in Eph 6:19-24 reveal much about his attitude as God’s servant. He did not lose focus of his primary calling even though he was imprisoned for the cause of the gospel. His zeal was not diminished by his circumstances. Instead he called himself an ambassador in chains. Even in prison, he fulfilled his calling as an ambassador for Christ. God’s calling for him was to bring the gospel to Gentiles and Israel. This was revealed at his conversion when God told Ananias in Damascus: “Go! This man (Paul) is My chosen instrument to carry My Name before the Gentiles and their kings and before the people of Israel. I will show him how much he must suffer for My Name” (Acts 9:15-16). It will serve us well to learn from Paul’s example of following Jesus.
Paul coveted the prayers of believers. He had suffered much and overcame much to advance the gospel yet he did not rest on his past victories in courage and perseverance. He asked the Ephesians to pray that he will share the gospel fearlessly. From his many letters written to the churches in Asia Minor, he exhibited all the intellect, wisdom and experience in sharing the gospel. Yet, here he humbly asked for prayers that words may be given to him when he opens his mouth. The ambassador in chain wants to press on with the prayer support of fellow believers. His prayer requests were not self-centred despite the dire situation he was in and that is a tough feat to follow!
Paul groomed faithful co-laborers who were instrumental in the work of advancing the cause of Christ. Tychicus was the faithful servant who had helped to connect him and the Ephesians, bringing much needed encouragement to both parties. There is no room for single heroes in God’s kingdom. God’s purpose is often accomplished by teams of committed believers sharing the same vision. Paul’s co-laborers played an equally important role as Paul.
Do you know what is God’s calling for you or are you just living a self centred life? Are you serving God faithfully and zealously or are you lukewarm in your service? One who is lukewarm in service will be easily discouraged, distracted and even side-tracked. He who is zealous for God will be an overcomer who will draw on all resources, including prayer, to stay on course.
